Lavra Funicular, EST. 1884

Novas 121.jpg

It’s working since 1884 and it’s called Elevador do Lavra, considered to be one of the first street funicular in the world and the oldest in Lisbon. Projected by Portuguese engineer Raul Mesnier du Ponsard, the funicular links Largo de Anunciada, on the eastern side of Restauradores to Travessa do Forno do Torel, located uphill. The short distance (188 m) has a medium grade of 22,9% and if you want to walk uphill (are you sure you want to walk?!) don’t forget to take a deep breath before you go. Once you reach the top, make a short break and enjoy the view at Jardim do Torel.
