Elevador da Gloria – A moving monument EST. 1885

DSC_0560

The Glória Funicular was opened to the public on October 24, 1885. At first it was designed as a water-powered system, later it was steam-power and finally in 1915 it was electrified. It’s running every day from dusk till dawn and it’s a National Monument since 2002. We called simply Elevador da Glória and the last time we spotted it was dressed up with magnificent tiles. This is the glorious way of reaching Bairro Alto. It can be a little expensive as one way costs nearly 4€, but it’s worth every coin. Locals use it daily as the other way to reach Bairro Alto is a painful steep hill. Spare your aching feet and get on board!
